Model Systems and Business Rules
We strongly believe in business rules as a basis for business models and specifications, and for application development.
Business Rules Experience
Since the mid-1990s, Model Systems has supported clients in rules-based systems in a range of application areas, including:
- Intranet-based Business Intelligence Support, Purchasing and Customer Relationship Management
- Gaming
- Delivery of operational data to data warehouses and decision support systems
- Regulation and business policy
Methodology
We are collaborating with our partners KnowGravity Inc (Zurich), Business Semantics Ltd (London) and Inferware (Boston, MA, USA) in developing methodologies for rules-based business models and IT applications.
Much of our work is based on specifications from the Object Management Group, especially:
- Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR), publicly available since December 2007, and devloped in response to an OMG RFP. Model Systems is a supporter of the specification and participated in its development. John Hall of Model Systems is a member of the revision task force
- The Business Motivation Model (BMM), also publicly available since December 2007, and adopted by the OMG from a standard published by the Business Rules Group. Model Systems is a supporter of the specification and participated in its development. John Hall of Model Systems is chair of the revision task force
Business Rules Group
Model Systems is a charter member of the Business Rules Group. Keri Anderson Healy (formerly of Model Systems USA) is secretary to the group and manages its web site. She is also co-editor of its publications. John Hall (Model Systems UK) is a contributor to the Business Rules Group's publications and a former chair of the group.
Regulatory Compliance
Model Systems is a member of the Object Management Group's Regulatory Compliance Domain SIG, and John Hall is its co-chair. The SIG is currently developing an RFP for a business-oriented specification for reaction to regulatory change, building on the OMG's recently developed SBVR and BMM specifications.
Business Rules Community
Business Rules Community is a free web site of business rules information, resources and links. Keri Anderson Healy edits its major publication "The Business Rules Journal". John Hall contributes "Dispatches" columns from the Business Rules Group, and is also Technology Review editor.
European Business Rules Conference 2008
Model Systems is a sponsor and co-organizer of the annual European Business Rules Conference (EBRC). EBRC2007 took place in Dusseldorf, from 18-20 June 2005. EBRC2008will be held in Munich, from 16 - 18 June 2008, at the Marriott Hotel. John Hall is co-chair, with Silvie Spreeuwenberg of LibRT.
Model Systems will present two tutorials
- "Business Rules Boot Camp" - an introduction to Business Rules for the complete novice.
- "Semantics and Business Rules - emerging standards", jointly with KnowGravity, and including a demonstration of tools supporting the standards
Both of these tutorials are available for presentation in-house, for groups of up to 30.
